You’re never more than a few minutes away from just about any food, product, or service you could want—and yes, that includes things your dog absolutely does not need but you’ll buy anyway. While city living is super convenient for both humans and pups, it also comes with a lot of noise, congestion, and more concrete than grass.

Below are some of my favorite dog-friendly spots in and around Chicagoland—some right in the city, and others a little farther out when you and your pup need to escape the chaos and touch some grass (literally).

Animal Krackers Pet Center – Merrionette Park, IL

No, this store isn’t technically in Chicago—but I had to list it first because it’s our go-to local pet shop. This is where we buy most of our doggy goods, and honestly, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to ditch big-box pet stores forever. The shop is always clean, well-stocked, and full of staff who actually seem excited to see your dog.

They’ve been a neighborhood staple since 1995, and it shows—they truly care about serving local pets. We bring both of our girls in regularly to sniff everything, and they’re always greeted with treats at checkout. Basically, it’s Target for dogs… but better.

Pup-Social – Chicago, IL

Full disclosure: I haven’t made it here yet, but it’s clearly a local favorite. Think of it as a country club for dogs—minus the khakis. Pup-Social offers indoor and outdoor lounge areas, a bar, dog (and human!) salons, training, daycare, and boarding. They pretty much said, “What if we did everything?” and then actually did it.

I’d love to check it out, but it’s on the North Side and I live on the South Side, which in Chicago terms might as well be another state. It can also get a bit pricey, so it’s not for everyone—but if you’re a DINK, that means you probably have a little extra money to spend, so why not pamper you and your pet?

Montrose Dog Beach – Chicago, IL

Yes, this is a real beach on Lake Michigan that is dedicated entirely to dogs. And yes, it’s as amazing as it sounds. We’ve been here a few times and have had great experiences every visit.

My lab, Remi, absolutely lives for swimming, so this place is basically her version of Disney World. My beagle mix, Dixie, is… less enthusiastic about the water, but there’s plenty of beach for her to explore while she judges Remi from a safe, dry distance. This is hands-down one of my favorite summer spots.

Dixie actually decided to get her paws a little wet this visit!

Belmont Harbor Dog Beach – Chicago, IL

Another dog beach—because Chicago really understood the assignment. Belmont Harbor Dog Beach is much smaller than Montrose and doesn’t leave much room for lounging or zoomies, so it’s mainly a swim-focused spot.

The upside? It’s right off the Lakefront trail, making it perfect for a walk before or after some lake time. If your dog isn’t big on swimming, at least they can enjoy a nice stroll and some premium people-watching.

Dixie doesn’t like the water so she opted to hang under the dock

Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve – Darien, IL

Easily one of the prettiest forest preserves in Cook County—and yes, leashed dogs are welcome. The trails are well-groomed, scenic, and perfect for long walks or light hikes when you want to feel like you’re far from the city without actually driving that far. If your dog enjoys sniffing every leaf like it’s their job, this is the place.

Duck Farm Off-Leash Dog Park – Lake Villa, IL

This place looks like an absolute dream for dogs. Duck Farm is a massive 48-acre, fully fenced, off-leash dog area with a separate enclosure for small dogs under 25 pounds (because size does matter here). It’s part of the Lake County Forest Preserves, and while you do need a permit to enter, the good news is that daily permits are available.

I recently learned about this spot, so I haven’t visited yet—but it’s definitely on my list. I’ll update once we go, assuming my dogs don’t immediately decide they live there now.

Living an urban lifestyle definitely has its perks.
